Are You Broke Because of Old Belief Systems that Don’t Serve You Any Longer?
Quick question . . .
How would it feel if while you were busy going about your day, your email inbox filled up with notifications confirming payments received and prospects booking directly onto your calendar for their free consultation?
Pretty good? I’m guessing it would feel a lot better than opening up your email to a bunch more junk mail, that’s for sure.
As heart-centered business owners, it can be hard to ask for money from potential clients. It’s not uncommon for our community to miss out on hundreds, even thousands of dollars in sales even when we are absolutely the best person to help them and they are ready to receive help!
Why is that?
The most common problem that I’ve seen with my clients is that they typically have underlying negative beliefs about money, wealth, and sometimes even themselves.
These negative beliefs can create a paralyzing relationship when it comes to money and sales.
(Of course negative beliefs and issues with money are complex and express themselves in multitudes of ways. It’s important to note that this is a HUGE topic; we are really just skimming the surface here for the purpose of this post.)
So today I want to talk to you about overcoming your negative beliefs about money and wealth, and that starts with RECOGNIZING your negative beliefs. In another post (coming next week), I’ll talk about how to overcome your negative beliefs by TRANSFORMING them.
Recognize the Old Belief System
When you were growing up did you ever hear your parents say anything like:
“Money doesn’t grow on trees.”
“Money is the root of all evil.”
“The rich get richer and the poor get poorer.”
Or my parent’s particular favourite, “Who do you think I am, Rockerfeller?”
While this might seem innocent enough, over the years your brain subconsciously learns and accepts these thought processes, and as a result you learn to believe that money is scarce and difficult to come by, or that you have to be selfish and heartless to become wealthy, or even that money makes people evil!
In the coaching world, we like to call these old belief systems “gremlins.” Gremlins are thoughts that are rooted in an old belief system that don’t serve you anymore. We all have gremlins. Unfortunately, they can be debilitating and can significantly slow down your progress in life and business.
These gremlins are not something we give a lot of thought to when it comes to building a successful business, but when you take a moment to think about it, it makes sense … of course it’s going to be difficult to attract something into your life that you believe is the source of all evil! It’s only logical, right?!?!
So, by not asking for the sale, you are protecting yourself from:
- Having to address these underlying negative beliefs.
- Rejection: the risk of hearing, “No” (or worse, criticism!) from a potential client. Which can trigger your negative beliefs about your worth.
The problem with these negative beliefs is that if you let them win and never ask for the sale, you also never open yourself up to the possible “Yes! This is perfect for me!” You are essentially closing yourself off from any possible financially abundant future.
To uncover your negative beliefs about money and wealth, start by taking a few minutes ask yourself:
- What were you told and taught about money growing up in your family and culture?
- What are your fears or doubts regarding sales?
- What comes up for you when it comes time to sell your service?
Make a list of all of your beliefs, good and bad, and where they came from.
Next, think about which beliefs are having the greatest negative impact on your life. To help you determine this, consider how your behavior/life would change if that belief suddenly ceased to exist.
Now that you have a list of your negative beliefs and have identified the ones with the greatest negative impact, it’s time to start addressing them. Save your responses for next week’s follow up post where I’ll show you how to transform your beliefs around money and wealth.
